Martin’s Bar-B-Que Joint is a whole-hog barbecue restaurant with roots that go back to 2006, when pitmaster Pat Martin opened his first location in Nolensville after learning the craft in Henderson, Tennessee. The Downtown Nashville spot on 4th Avenue South, just steps from Broadway, carries that same West Tennessee tradition into the heart of Music City.
The ribs were the star of the table: a thick, dark bark under a heavy dusting of dry rub, pulled clean off the bone with real smoke ring showing through. Alongside came a pulled pork plate on white bread, the classic West Tennessee way to serve it, plus a scoop of loaded potato salad and a side of tangy coleslaw. Everything is made from scratch daily, no freezers or microwaves in sight, and it shows in the texture and freshness of every side.
One thing worth knowing before you go: the line to order doubles as a little retail shop. As you queue up, you pass displays of Martin’s own bottled sauces, dry rubs, and spice blends, so there’s plenty of time to browse and grab a bottle to take home before you reach the counter, where the menu is posted on a board overhead.
Sauce-wise, Martin’s Jack’s Creek Bar-B-Que Sauce stood out, a classic West Tennessee style built on a sweet vinegar and pepper base that cuts through the richness of the smoked meat without overpowering it. It’s worth asking for a side of it even if you think you don’t need extra sauce.
The room has that unpretentious smokehouse feel: communal tables, a busy counter, and the smell of hickory smoke in the air the second you walk in. For anyone exploring Nashville’s barbecue scene, this Downtown location is a strong, easy first stop.
