Not every great meal in New Orleans needs to be a whole event. Sometimes you just want to walk in, sit at the bar, and order the two things the city does better than anywhere else. That is exactly what Mr. Ed’s on Royal Street delivered.
Where to find it
Mr. Ed’s Southern Creole Kitchen sits right at the corner of Royal and Iberville, one of the newer French Quarter locations from the Mr. Ed’s family that has been serving oysters in this city since 1989. It has a nice bar to post up at if you are not looking for a full sit down meal, and it is an easy stop if you are already wandering Royal Street’s antique shops and galleries.
The char-grilled oysters
These were the highlight, no contest. Fresh oysters straight off the char grill, that smoky, slightly charred edge on the shell, butter and garlic pooling underneath each one. They come out hot and you want to eat them the second they land in front of you. Mr. Ed’s has built a real reputation on chargrilled oysters across all their locations, and this one lived up to it completely.
The bowl of gumbo
A proper gumbo is a good test of any Creole kitchen, and this one passed. Dark roux, that deep, slow cooked flavor you cannot fake, loaded with enough seafood and sausage to make it a meal on its own rather than a starter you forget about. Comforting, well seasoned, exactly what you want after wandering the Quarter for a few hours.
A few practical tips
-
The Royal and Iberville corner location is easy to combine with a stroll through the antique shops nearby.
-
It also serves breakfast, so this is a solid option if you want Creole staples earlier in the day and not just at dinner.
-
Sit at the bar if you are solo or just want something quick. Full table service is available too.
-
Pair the oysters and gumbo together for a meal that hits both the raw bar and comfort food side of New Orleans cooking.
No frills, no long wait, just two dishes done the way they are supposed to be done. Mr. Ed’s on Royal is proof that some of the best meals in the Quarter do not need reservations or a view, just good technique and fresh seafood.
