Tucked into a vaulted, arched dining room in the heart of Niederdorf, Restaurant Brasserie Johanniter has been serving traditional Swiss cooking since 1901. The stone columns, ceiling fans, and that oversized copper hood over the bar area give the place a lived-in, old-world brasserie feel that’s hard to fake, this is over a century of history, not a themed interior.
The food
Johanniter’s kitchen sticks to Swiss classics made with regional ingredients, and one savory snack and two desserts we tried are what stood out.
The Walliser Raclette mit Kartoffeln, Essiggurken und Silberzwiebeln (Valais raclette with potatoes, pickles, and pearl onions) is melted raclette cheese finished with a dusting of paprika, served the traditional way alongside boiled potatoes, pickles, and small pickled onions to cut through the richness.
The Lauwarmes Schokokuchlein mit Vanille Glace (warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream) is a molten chocolate cake served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a cloud of whipped cream, and both chocolate sauce and a light vanilla cream pooled around the plate. Warm center, cold ice cream, the classic combination done well.
The Hausgemachter Apfelstrudel mit Vanillesauce (homemade apple strudel with vanilla sauce) arrives dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with chocolate, sitting in a full pool of vanilla sauce with a scoop of ice cream on the side. It’s a heartier, more traditional finish to the meal, flaky pastry against that warm vanilla sauce.
These sit alongside the restaurant’s Swiss standards, cordon bleu, Zürcher Geschnetzeltes, rösti, and the kind of home-style cooking Johanniter has built its reputation on for over a hundred years.
Should you go
If you’re wandering Niederdorf and want a sit-down Swiss meal in a room with real history, Johanniter is an easy stop. It’s open daily, service is attentive, and portions are generous by Zurich standards. Save room for dessert.
