Barcelona-style tapas bars are not something you expect to find steps from the Ryman, but Boqueria at Fifth and Broadway pulls it off with real conviction. This was a stop built around small plates and one classic cocktail that ended up being the actual headline of the night.
The Serrano Ham Grilled Cheese
Egg-dipped bread, pan-fried until golden and slightly crisp on the outside, stuffed with jamón serrano and burrata, finished with a truffle allioli and a scatter of chives. It reads like a simple sandwich on the menu, but the burrata melts into something closer to a rich, creamy filling than a typical grilled cheese, and the truffle allioli pushes it into something worth ordering again.
The Seared Octopus
Tender char-grilled octopus over olive oil crushed potatoes, topped with a Manzanilla olivada, that chunky green olive relish that adds brine and acidity right where the dish needs it, finished with a dusting of pimentón. This is the kind of tapa that photographs well and tastes even better, smoky char on the octopus balanced against the soft, almost mashed texture of the potatoes underneath.
The Negroni
This is the one to order. Boqueria pours a classic Negroni built on one of their Spanish red vermouths, and that vermouth makes all the difference. Boqueria stocks a solid lineup of them, including a Destilerías Atxa Red Vermut with herbs, baking spice, plum, and fig, and a Casa Mariol Vermut Negre leaning into cola, almonds, and raisins, either of which would explain the depth in this glass. It came out with real complexity, more character than a lot of Negronis built on the usual bottle, and it genuinely held its own against versions ordered in Italy. If there is one thing to prioritize on this menu, it is this cocktail.
A few practical tips
-
Recommend 2 to 3 tapas per person if you are sharing across the table, portions are built for grazing.
-
Happy hour runs Monday through Thursday 3 to 6pm and Friday 4 to 6pm, worth timing a visit around if you want to sample more for less.
-
The restaurant sits right across from the Country Music Hall of Fame area and near Bridgestone Arena, easy to fold into a downtown evening.
-
If octopus and Serrano grilled cheese are working for you, the patatas bravas and croquetas are worth adding to round out the table.
Boqueria proved itself on both fronts, sharp execution on the tapas and a Negroni that genuinely held its own against ones from Italy. A downtown Nashville stop worth building an evening around.
